New Year In Nepal

This New Years I was lucky enough to go to Nepal. I flew out on the 29th December 2011 with Qatar Airways who were very good with letting me take my Kayak for free. Once I arrived in Kathmandu it was straight to the the river where I spent the next 10 days kayaking on 5 different rivers.

I was in Nepal for 10 days and managed to paddle everyday apart from News Years Day. I paddled the Trisuli, Upper Seti, Bhoto Kosi, Marsyangdi and the Bilefi River. I paddled the Pyranha Burn Medium and this was a great boat for Nepal.

This week saw Norfolk Canoes on location with a TV Production Company filming for Sky TV. Well it was a secret location where we meet the film crew with Canoes and Equipment ready to film.

The show follows Bridesmaids and what they get up to on Hen parties. Here the Chief Bridesmaid has planned for all five Bridesmaids to spend the weekend outdoors going Canoeing/Kayaking, Camping etc. But as you can see from the pictures the other Bridesmaids had no idea and thought they were going on a night out. There were some very dirty high heels and wet and unhappy bridesmaids.

Norfolk Canoes East Anlia Demo Day - Part 2 - This Sunday

Due to popular demand we are pleased to announce the second Norfolk Canoes East Anglia Demo Day 2011.

Following on from the great success of the first Norfolk Canoes East Anglia Demo Day held in May this year we have decided to do it all again.

On Sunday 11th September 2011 we will be holding the East Anglia Demo Day Part 2 where anyone is welcome to come along and for a small £3 donation try out any number of a wide variety of canoes, kayaks and inflatables that will be available on the day. It is sure to be a great opportunity for anyone looking for their next, or even first purchase, or if you would just like to have a go at paddling and get on the water in a supervised, safe and fun environment.

It is being held in aid of a local scout group, the 16th Norwich Sea Scouts based on The Street in Old Costessey Norwich, NR8 5BD, who last year suffered a fire which destroyed one of their buildings and all the equipment inside. One of the most expensive items they lost was their fleet of canoes and kayaks.

There will also be many other activities availabe through the Scouts, such as Rifle Shooting and Archery. The Scouts will be offering hot and cold food and drink for sale including a Barbecue.

The event is being held on Sunday 11th September from 11am until 4pm and all money raised is going to the Sea Scouts. Free car parking and changing facilities will be available on site.

A £3 donation to the 16th Norwich Sea Scouts will give you unlimited access to all the Canoes, Kayaks, Inflatables and Equipment that you can try in one day.

There will be hot and cold food and drink available.

Ottawa River, Canada

So last week I spent a week on the Ottawa River in Canada. There were three of us in total and we had all booked to fly to Ottawa Airport with Canadian Affair, we went with them as we were able to book on our kayaks. When travelling with kayaks you are always nerves especially at the airport, what happens if they don’t let us take them? What happens if they weigh them? What is our back up plan? Well we had no backup plan but once at Gatwick Airport we smiled nicely to the lady at the check in desk and told her they weigh only 20kg. Anyway after a short period the boats and paddles had been checked in along with our luggage.

Once we arrived in Ottawa and had collected our boats and bags it was time to collect the hire car. Now it is not the best idea to turn up to the desk with three kayaks and an inflatable roof rack as this may raise a few questions that you don’t want to answer. Any way one went to collect the car whilst the others found a nice quite place away from the car hire depot and took all the boats and bags and waited until we had collected the car. It just so happens that they had decided to waite right next to a bus stop and bus lane. After a quick pump of the roof rack and a few strange looks from people at the bus stop we were on our way.

It only takes one and half hours to drive to the Ottawa Valley. We stopped on the way to pick up provisions. Two of us had brought our own camping equipment with us but one did not. So it was off to Wall Mart to find some cheap camping equipment.

As you drive out of Ottawa city and head to the river you expect to see mountains, but as you continue to drive further away from the city all you see is farm land and the odd house. I thought I was still in Norfolk and on the way to work. As you get closer to the valley you can catch a glimpse of the river, well it looked more like a lake than a river, and you start to wonder where all the white water is.

We decided to stay at River Run Rafting as this is the place to stay, where all the cool kids hang out. We got there and the place was dead. After some investigating and asking around we found out that being a Monday afternoon everyone had gone home and back to work/school after the weekend. We had the place to ourselves. Well that was until the evening when we had to share the campsite with Raccoons, Chipmunks and Skunks. Luckily there were no bears.

After a good night sleep but still jet lagged we hit the river. A nice easy park n play spot near to where we were staying, and we were in luck with the water level. We were able to surf what the locals call Warm Apple Pie, a nice hole with easy eddy service.

The second day we ran the main channel, when you don’t know where you are going it can be quite hard. There are so many different changes/Islands etc. We knew to stay right so we just went right of all the islands and took the right hand channels. It worked as we ended up at the top of Bus Eater. Unfortunately we were a week to late with the water levels as they had dropped and Bus Easter was not working, yet it was still too high for some of the other waves such as Garbiater. However Big Bus Eater was. Big Bus Eater does what it says on the tin. It will eat a bus, it is a hugh hole that you want to stay away from.

We continued down the river and eventually found Coliseum. Here were some of the biggest waves we had ever seen. After a quick look we had decided on our line and went for it. What we had not looked at was the big ledge further downstream that nearly ate one of us.

The next day we did the middle channel with a group of guide from Wilderness Tours. At this water level the Middle Channel is better with more waves and holes to play on. It was a good job we were with someone that new the river because there were even more Islands and channels to get lost in.

We were given the word that High Tension was working. This is another world class wave on the Gatineau River in Quebec. After getting directions from a local the night before we set off. The only problem was that we had no map and did not write any of the directions down. No problem it was simple, left at first junction, left at second junction on to gravel road, left in to Quebec and follow the signs for Gatineau River & Rafting. After an hour and half we made it.

The river is very simpler to the Ottawa River, big holes, big waves, flat, big holes, big waves, flat, you get the idea. High Tension was working and working very well indeed. The only problem with this wave is the hole behind it and if that does not get you the eddy line will. The eddy line was like Hurley Weir is but 10 times the size and with lots of boyils. Anyway after a good day on the river we decied to head back again the following day.
The trouble with going to Quebec for the a couple days is that they all speak French, but not the French you and I learnt at school. They don’t speak a word of English and when you start talking in French they look at you as if to stay what the hell are you saying.

Anyway after getting back to the campsite on the Ottawa it was as if Spring Break was about to start. As it was a Friday afternoon three hundred people had turned up for a weekend of rafting and drinking. But not just anyone, it was three hundred Canadians. What followed over the next 48 hours was a lot of high fives and the word rafting yeah.

Buy this time the Ottawa Valley had woken up and there were a lot more paddlers about for the weekend, and a lot more rafters about.

The last day we thought we would treat ourselves to a breakfast at the local diner, we pulled up to find another paddler already there. After sitting down and waiting for our meal we started chatting to said paddler. He said he was just hanging around until her got his van fixed and then was off to the airport to head to Germany for the World Freestyle Championships. The said paddler was Stephen Wright. Considering he was about to compete in a major championships he seemed very relaxed eating his egg and homemade fries for breakfast.

Anyway we spent the last day paddling on the Ottawa. This was a great trip, we all took play boats with us and the weather was warm. We had no problems getting are boats back home and the car hire company did not notice any of the dents on the roof. Who looks for dents on car roofs anyway?

Disappointment in Devon?

Last week I was away on the South Coast of Devon for a break and hoping to get in some great sit on top touring and fishing around the coastline. Rugged coastline with plenty of bays only accessible from the sea with the promise of early arrivals of Bass and Mackerel were on the cards. Late May, good weather and that part of the coast should be nicely sheltered from the standard winds that come in from the west, methinks. Game on!

Wrong!

Strong gusty winds from the South and South West really cutting up the water meant that the first part of the week was devoid of any paddling while on the Wednesday the weather broke and I was able to get out and give the lures a swim. Unfortunately no one told the fish I would be there and so I sadly blanked, much to my shame. Then the weather remembered what it was doing and really got the bit between its teeth with more high winds, rain and low temperatures - lovely. Gentle paddling and fishing took a backseat for the last few days and gave way instead to some surf fun.

So it was down to Sandy Bay just east of Exmouth where the nicely shelving sand made for some well spaced sets of up to 1.5 meters providing some great rides and combined with the strong winds a really challenging paddle about.

All in all, not quite what I was hoping for but it has certainly whetted my appetite for a return trip – later in the year and on the spur on the moment when the weather reports are favourable!

Norfolk Canoes East Anglia Demo Day

On Saturday the 14^th of May this year Norfolk Canoes held their first ever East Anglia Demo Day. The event was organised in association with the 16^th Norwich Sea Scouts as a fund raising event. Late last year the Sea Scouts lost all of their kayaks in a fire and all money raised was to go to replacing their fleet. For just £3 anyone could come along and get on the water in as many of the boats as they like as many times as they liked.

We had high hopes on both attendance and the weather, with hot and cold food and drinks laid on to satisfy the droves of eager paddlers we looked forward to welcoming! The forecast running up to the day looked ominous but we were delighted to see blue skies and no clouds come the morning. How long would this last we wondered?

We set out our small flotilla of canoes, kayaks and inflatables ready for inspection. The manufacturers who kindly came along to the day were set up and ready. Now all we needed were some eager folk wanting to get afloat.

10.00 am came and people started to arrive. Some came to browse but most came to get in a boat or two. Soon the small stretch of river became a busy waterway and barring the occasional minor collision, someone getting stuck in the reeds and the rare capsize our safety instructors came quickly to the rescue of, the day passed with many smiles and a great deal of enjoyment. Of course the brief hail storm and light shower now and again made everyone take cover for a bit, but otherwise the day was a great success.

In all over 100 people took to the water, we raised a healthy amount of money for the Scouts and hopefully introduced many people to the wonderful world of paddlesports.

With all this warm sunny weather we’ve had other the past couple of weeks it was only right to get out paddling and enjoy it whilst it lasts. So this Easter Sunday a few of us headed to the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham for a full day of play boating in the sunshine.

Wildlife Watching From A Hobie Kayak On The Norfolk Broads.

Today the guys from Norfolk Canoes were out and about on Rockland Broad doing a spot of wildlife watching. It was a little overcast and on the cool side, but dressed for the conditions, out we went. In order to get close as possible and not spook the wildlife, we decided that the best boat for the job would be our Moss coloured Hobie Outback. Its dark green colour blended in perfectly with the vegetation, while the Mirage drive system allowed for a near silent approach to our favourite spots. The camo clothing helped with the whole blending-in look and we were treated to some really great views.

It’s spring and there is a lot of activity on and around the water with summer migratory birds now arriving in droves. Gone are the huge flocks of Brent and Barnacle Geese now on their way North, and it was a welcome return to the Swallows and Martins as they swoop and arc above the water. There were cracking mating displays from pairs of Great Crested Grebes head bobbing and dancing in perfect synchronisation. Reed Warblers were starting to sing again marking out their territories for the coming summer.

The Hobie performed excellently on the water. Its multiple storage hatches and tanks gave plenty of places to put the camera, binoculars and excess clothing. The fact that the kayak can be pedalled with your feet made it ideal as this meant we did not have to keep stopping to stow the paddle, pick up the binoculars, find again what we had seen only to discover that we had now missed it.

Roll on the warmer months.

National Watersports Centre Nottingham

Last weekend we decided to head to Nottingham to have a play on the white water course. It was the first time we had been there since they had made the recent changes. They have improved the course dramatically and it now offers more waves/holes for play boating. It was a good opportunity to test the new Wavesport Project X. The new Wavesport Project X is a nice looking boat, it just wants to go big all the time. We found that it was fast on a wave and once you initiated a move it was just a case of letting the boat do it's thing and you following, We were having so much fun that we only managed to get a few photos.

Setting up an Anchor Trolley System for your Kayak

We often get asked how to set up an anchor trolley system on your Sit On Top kayaks. There are many different ways to do this. Below is an example of one way to do this.

Equipment needed: Pad Eyes, Rivets, Jam Cleat, Tie Down Cleat, Anchor, Pulley, Rope, Drill

Tools needed: Rivet Gun, Drill

Step 1. Read completely through any directions supplied in your anchor trolley kit before drilling any holes. It is also a good idea to temporarily tape the cleats and pad eyes in place, and then try out the locations by sitting in the kayak on the ground with the paddle to make certain they do not interfere with paddling.

Step 2. Stern Pad eye

On top of kayak, measure 1” from stern tip and drill first hole with the drill bit. Use pad eye and rivet as a template to mark the second hole. Place pad eye over the two holes and place rivets into holes. Pop rivets with rivet gun.

Step 3. Midship pad eye

The second pad eye will be placed near the cockpit on the outer edge of the kayak, leaving enough room for the tie down cleat to be located so that it is easily reached. Fit pad eye the same as the stern one above and rivet in place.

Step 4. Jam cleat

The jam cleat must be directly in line from rear pad eye to front pad eye. You can use the piece of rope, temporarily tied between the two pad eyes, to mark the location. The ridges in the inside of the cleat form an arrow. The cleat should be oriented so that arrow points to the stern, and the wide end is forward. Drill holes, place rivets through the holes in cleat and hull and pop rivets.

Step 5. Tie down cleat

Locate the tie down cleat where it is close at hand and easily reached from the cockpit. It will generally be positioned about 1 ½” forward of the midship pad eye. Drill holes, place rivets and pop rivets.

Step 6. Rigging the pulley line

To assemble the pulley line, feed the rope through both pad eyes so the ends are facing outboard. Place the two rope ends parallel with about eight inches of overlap. Tie a barrel knot with one of the ends around the other, about 8 inches from the end.Slide the pulley onto the free end, and pull out slack so that the line is taught. Tie another barrel knot with the free end, trapping the pulley in between the knots and between the parallel lines.Make sure the tension is tight between pad eyes. Work excess line through the knot, if needed. Cut off excess, and melt the ends of the rope to prevent fraying.

Step 7. Rigging the anchorTie the remainder of the rope onto anchor ring with a barrel knot. Pull tight. Thread the other end through the pulley, tie a stopper knot, (large enough to keep the line from pulling completely through the pulley if dropped) and make fast on tie down cleat.

Your anchor trolley is now ready to use, so good luck and happy fishing.

River Bure, Norfolk

Whilst Tom was off white water paddling on Sunday, Steve decided to go for a leisurely paddle down the River Bure here in Norfolk. Steve was paddling his Ocean Kayak Trident 13, he was joined by Andy in his brand new Ocean Kayak Trident 13. Starting at Horstead Mill they paddled the 6km down to Wroxham and then the 6km back to Horstead Mill. The sun was out but it was still a chilly morning so there was not time to stop for any fishing.

The rain came on Saturday night so we headed over to South Wales on Sunday and met up with a couple of good friends and members of staff from Cheltenham Canoes for a spot of paddling. On hand will be many of the leading manufacturers to answer any questions you may have and advise on which boats would be best suited to your needs.
Thule Roofrack Systems will also be in attendance to help give advice when transporting your canoe or kayak. However if you are not into paddling but have issues carrying bikes or luggage, they can help with that too!
The Broads Authority will be represented on the day to answer any questions on where and how to paddle on the Norfolk Broads safely.
There will be hot and cold food and drink available throughout the day and on site changing facilities.
There will be a £3 charge for anyone wishing to get on the water and this will entitle you to try out as many boats as you like. All monies raised on the day will go to the 16th Norwich Sea Scouts.
This event is a great opportunity for you to demo a wide variety of canoes, kayaks, sit on tops, inflatable canoes and equipment, and chat with industry professionals.

Meet the Norfolk Canoes Team

Tom first started kayaking many years ago and has worked as an Instructor and raft guide in many different countries. He opened the store in December 2009 after running an estate agent for 8 Years. Originally from Gloucestershire Tom has now settled in Norfolk where he can often be found exploring the Norfolk Broads and Coast by Canoe and Kayak. Tom has paddled and worked in many different countries including Nepal, Canada and extensively around Europe. His main paddling discipline is white water yet he has many years experience open canoeing and can be found floating down the broads in his Canoe.

Originally from Surrey, Steve escaped the Rat Race 8 years ago to live in Norfolk. He has worked in a wide range of sectors from marine conservation to catering and finally sales.Steve has paddled for many years, starting out in old fibreglass kayaks when little. During his time living in New Zealand Steve was regularly crewing sport fishing boats and paddling his way around the Bay Of Islands. He is commonly found inhabiting the Broads in search of big Pike or bobbing around off the North Norfolk coast trying to catch his dinner on a Sit On Top. Loves fishing and can happily swap 'one that got away' stories for hours.

North Wales

Norfolk Canoes team member Tom Page spent the weekend in North Wales. Due to the shortage of water the weekend was spent at the Tryweryn and the river Dee. Tom was paddling the Pyranha Molan. Due to the extreme cold weather the camera was temperamental so only a few photos to show from the weekend.
